The map reader illuminates a visible area with several tritium light sources. Through the magnifying lens, maps and other information can be read in the dark, without batteries. White light sources show the map colours better.

Light sources in green, white and infrared. Green gives the most light to the eye. White shows the map colours best. Infrared is in practice visible only through night vision.
